Caught Outside...Now What?
At this point in the viral video cycle, you are probably already familiar with the aforementioned, yet paraphrased statement.
"Cash me ousside, how bow dat" is the statement I am referring to, which I am almost certain very few can fully decipher.
Regardless to whether you know what was being said or not, it is safe to say that this whole situation has spiraled out of control. Predictable, yet still not healthy for any party involved.
What started off as a comical meme, has become a legitimate (and I use this term loosely) money maker; further encouraging already prevalent and reckless means to obtaining capital. I do not think I have uncovered anything in stating that this is a money hustle, but I am pretty sure that no party really wants to be caught outside, and that this is simply a gimmick to positively influence each parties bank account.
I am not holier than thou, as a part of me laughed as well, but there is a common thread here that we all know exists.
Act a particular way that will garner attention. Perform the same act on a much larger scale. Become a meme. Cash out, then beg for anonymity back, while resisting the fruits of your 'labor'.
What's unfortunate is those who should be protecting/assisting quite possibly are the ones exploiting, leaving the cash cow to their own unseasoned devices. Usually, this results in a convenient lack of supervision from the guardian, followed by an Oscar worthy dramatization of how difficult this circumstance may be. Thankfully for our distraught nominees, the financial gains generally pacify the otherwise unacceptable behavior and they can throw their hands up and simply blame the behavior on "kids being kids".
I am certainly not absolving any child for their actions completely, but where does anyone develop such behaviors. There will always be exceptions to the rule, but when you see a child who is blatantly disrespectful, and follow that by informing the necessary guardian and are met by a just as disrespectful guardian...it's hard to place all the blame on said child.
So what angle am I coming at here?
Essentially, we are in control of what is popular or not. If we watch it, it will gain stream. If we don't, it won't. Similar to the idea of a plant; if you water it, it will grow.
The same principle applies here. If somehow you reinforce the idea that being caught outside is some form of a threat in a world where people are really "about that action", you are creating an environment where slipping is the only thing they will be caught doing.
It is important to give a realistic perspective of what exists in the world and how to make the best of it. This can include how to communicate with people, how to obtain and sustain capital, and ways to live a more peaceful life, among several other tips.
If you are allowing, halfheartedly addressing, or failing to advise totally about behaviors that you know will be detrimental to the development of anyone, you my friend may be subject to an invitation outside...how about that?
Most importantly, for those of you who are doing it right...continue. It is always a pleasure to see parents and children alike, communicating in a healthy manner and looking out for each others' best interest, rather than trying to find a 'get rich quick' scheme.
For what it's worth, we at Club SEBU appreciate you, if no one else does.
Share tips on how to work hard and respect people. Find ways to build each other up rather than watch each other fall. For example, if you see someone challenge an entire crowd of people to a fight, it might be a good idea to get them out of that situation.
Or don't even bring them on TV in the first place...
The ratings will always be more important than the side effects that you will more than likely face from your newly acquired fame.
If you know someone is putting on a show for attention, they probably want attention; it's a simple equation. Don't engage in the negative, and encourage the positive. Everyone deserves attention, it's just a matter of helping each other know what attention is most beneficial, and capitalizing on that.
Regardless of the circumstance, everything can be made into a positive. Just make sure the intentions are genuine, or else the entire video looks like a side show.
You can do so much more with those 15 seconds of fame.
Until next time,
