Time Away

I briefly discussed self-instructed timeouts in Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...2.0, and have decided to revisit those timeouts from a different angle.

It is common for people to take some time away for a couple of moments to reevaluate certain aspects of their current situations.

If you are not one of the people described in the line above...

Next time you force yourself to go to that party that you never wanted to go to in the first place, just stay home and relax for yourself.  It can be extremely refreshing.

Furthermore, it's not so much about the time away, as much as it is about what you do with that time away.

It's certainly okay to have moments where you just do nothing at all and relax for the sheer purpose of relaxing, but beware of making that a habit.

Find things that are not going to stress you out but can still challenge you.

For example, I picked up an acoustic guitar a couple years ago and find myself messing around with chords quite often.  Of course I think I sound like Jimi Hendrix or John Mayer or Eric Clapton when I play, and am aware that I do not, but that's not the point.

The point is, when you have moments of free time, take advantage of them.

I'm not saying to find strenuous activities, that make you want to return your free time for something else...I'm simply saying to use that free time wisely.

Whatever it is could manifest into your day to day job, and that would certainly be worth getting ready for each morning.  In the mean time, make it something you look forward to each day.

And no...I am not considering an acoustic album, even though I think you would all enjoy that very much.  Note the sarcasm.

With summer rapidly approaching, especially for those of you who are still in school and get a summer vacation...

Don't let the summer months go by without working on something that will benefit you.  There will be plenty of time for you to sharpen so many skills.

You don't have to get up at 2 PM just because it's summer time.  I've been there before, and trust me, 9 AM really isn't that early.  Use those extra hours so you don't have to complain about not having enough hours in the day later on.

As for the working folks who don't get the luxury of summer vacation anymore, there are still several opportunities.  We have weekends, times off, early Friday's, and so many others.

Maybe start by just setting a summer task to complete over these months.  Whether its a book to read, a patio to build, or a garden to plant.  The choice is yours...

Once the summer comes, set aside 30 minutes a week, or day (whichever suits you) and commit to it.  Obviously, make sure it is something you enjoy doing, and watch that time away become productive self growth.

It's worth a shot.

In conclusion, always remember that you're not wrong for earning some time to relax.  Once you do what you need to do, it is actually very important to optimize those moments and cherish them.

You'll really surprise yourself when you see all that you can achieve when you put your stress-free mind to it.

And plus...

All reality shows have reruns anyways.  We can watch them later...

Until next time,
Long Live The People
